Teen Programs & Volunteer Opportunities
We offer a variety of programs throughout the year for teens in grades 6-12 at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue.
Summer Science Expedition: Global Citizens, Local Science
During the week of August 4-8, teens can become citizen scientists and take on an environmental research project helping scientists from the University of Washington study the effects of climate change on our local environment. Teens will work out of Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue for the first three days, then embark on an overnight trip to Mt. Rainier to conduct citizen science. Learn more
Environmental Science and Technology Practicum
This nine-week program for high school students explores environmental science, clean technology and associated careers. Each session offers in-depth, hands-on aquatic and terrestrial research in the wetland and in our state-of-the-art wet lab, as well as the opportunity to learn about careers and educational pathways from professionals in these fields. Environmental Science Pathways
This weekly after-school program is for middle school students interested in environmental science and clean technology. During this eight-week series, students discover the science behind renewable energy, watersheds and our natural environment. We conduct hands-on experiments and projects both in the field and in our state-of-the-art wetlab. Learn more
Lake Washington Watershed Internship
The Lake Washington Watershed Internship is a year-long (September to June) internship that helps teens become informed environmental scientists and stewards of their local community through mentoring, hands-on learning, habitat restoration and stream monitoring. Learn more
Naturalist In Training
This is a summer volunteer opportunity that offers experience working with young kids in our popular nature-based Camps for Curious Minds program in Bellevue. Learn more
Wet Lab Custom Student Programs
We can tailor our programs to meet the needs of your high school and middle school students. Our state-of-the-art wet lab and 320-acre Mercer Slough Nature Park provide an unparalleled opportunity to give students the tools to explore, study and be inspired by environmental chemistry and watershed science.
